Oh when the Saints: Sinterklaas

Oh when the Saints go marching in… E’ il cugino olandese di Santa Claus e soffre di eiaculazione precoce: arriva con largo anticipo rispetto al collega a stelle e strisce, ma del resto nella vita l’importante è arrivare, e lo fa in pompa magna su un’imbarcazione a vapore piena di regali. E’ Sinterklaas, ovvero San Nicola che, armato di barba bianca e mitra, in senso di copricapo, arriva in Olanda, ogni volta in una città diversa e a metà Novembre. Molto spesso viene confuso con il più famoso Santa Claus del Miracolo sulla 34a strada solo perchè i coloni olandesi portarono a New York la tradizione di Sint Klaas che fu americanizzato e diventò Santa Claus, ma con il Natale il santo olandese c’entra ben poco. La leggenda vuole che San Nicola ed i suoi aiutanti abitino in Spagna e che sorveglino per tutto l’anno i bimbi di tutto il mondo prendendo nota delle azioni cattive e di quelle buone ed il suo arrivo in terra olandese è una cosa seria: toccato il suolo dei Paesi Bassi il santo baratta l’imbarcazione con un cavallo bianco ed inizia la parata per la città seguito da acrobati, danzatori e folletti dalla faccia dipinta di nero a causa della fuliggine dei camini nei quali entrano per distribuire i regali, o almeno questa sembra essere la spiegazione più politically correct che è stata data quando sono state mosse al Santo accuse di comportamento discriminatorio per la scelta delle risorse umane. Sinter Klaas è acclamato in Olanda come una vera e propria celebrità: è il Justin Timberlake dei decori natalizi e dei mercatini di Natale e ad Amsterdam solitamente termina la sua parata a Leidseplein dove lascia il suo messaggio a grandi e piccini ed apre ufficialmente il count down per il 6 dicembre, la festa per eccellenza olandese che con l’eccitazione dei bambini che appena svegli aprono i regali e la magia di prendere 5 chili in due ore rappresenta lo spirito del Natale olandese. L’atmosfera è gioiosa ed allegra e lo spirito con il quale gli olandesi accolgono San Nicola è quello di amicizia e generosità, le prerogative principali del Santo.

The atmosphere is joyful and happy and the spirit to give the welcome to St. Nicholas is the one of friendship and generosity, the main prerogatives of the Holy.
